چکیده

This document contains an extended outline of the course including a bibliography. The idea of this reader is to provide a bird’s eye view of the literature and to list the main examples, definitions and theorems we will use throughout the course. As a consequence, expository text will be kept to a minimum. The website for the course is staff.science.uva.nl/∼epacuit/formep esslli.html On this website you will find the lecture notes and slides (updated each day). Enjoy the course and please remember to ask questions during the lecture, point out any mistakes and/or omitted references in this text.

Agency and Interaction What We Are and What We Do in Formal Epistemology

Formal epistemology is the study of crucial concepts in general or mainstream epistemology including knowledge, belief (-change), certainty, rationality, reasoning, decision, justification, learning, agent interaction and information processing using a spread of different formal tools. These formal tools may be drawn from fields such as logic, probability theory, game theory, decision theory, f...

Formal Representations of Belief

Epistemology is the study of knowledge and justified belief. Belief is thus central to epistemology. It comes in a qualitative form, as when Sophia believes that Vienna is the capital of Austria, and a quantitative form, as when Sophia's degree of belief that Vienna is the capital of Austria is at least twice her degree of belief that tomorrow it will be sunny in Vienna. Formal epistemology, as...

FORMAL EPISTEMOLOGY: Representing the fixation of belief and its undoing

Formal epistemology is a discipline with various branches and sub-branches dealing with precise representations of attitudes and their flux. The formal tools utilized for this purpose go from standard probability theory to non-standard (or infinitesimal) probability, to decision theoretical tools to logical tools. These lectures are divided in two parts. The first part deals with static represe...

Bayesian Epistemology

Bayesian epistemology addresses epistemological problems with the help of the mathematical theory of probability. It turns out that the probability calculus is especially suited to represent degrees of belief (credences) and to deal with questions of belief change, confirmation, evidence, justification, and coherence. Compared to the informal discussions in traditional epistemology, Bayesian ep...

VINCENT F . HENDRICKS Modal Operator Theory

Formal treatments of epistemology and epistemological issues have come a great way in recent years. Valuable results have been produced by Bayesians, in formal learning theory (also known as computational epistemology in [Kelly 96] and epistemic logic. While the first to formal approaches concentrate on learning and knowledge acquisition issues, the latter concentrate on axiomatics and validity...

Formal Epistemology and the New Paradigm Psychology of Reasoning

This position paper advocates combining formal epistemology and the new paradigm psychology of reasoning in the studies of conditionals and reasoning with uncertainty. The new paradigm psychology of reasoning is characterized by the use of probability theory as a rationality framework instead of classical logic, used by more traditional approaches to the psychology of reasoning. This paper pres...
